Heidi Zech-Long - 12:20am Jul 9, 2000 Irish

Greetings! My husband's ancestor, Patrick Long, was born in County Donegal about 1748, married Elizabeth Stewart in Ireland and emigrated with her and three children to Pennsylvania, U.S.A. They moved to Canada in 1797. He left two brothers, William and James, behind. I am interested in knowing why he emigrated. Are there any of this family left in County Donegal? Thanks.

Pat Greenwell - 06:41pm Sep 4, 2001 Irish (#10 of 299)

My ancestor was ALEXANDER HAMILTON,born in Ireland about 1814.He probably emigrated to Canada about 1835. He was married in 1839 in Kingston,Ontario, to ELLEN O'BRIEN and all their 9 children were born in Frontenac County. The only possible clue I have to his Irish origins is a record in the book-'Passengers to New Brunswick,Customs House Records", listing Alexander Hamilton, age 21 of Donegal as a passenger on the "Dan O'Connell". I would like to believe that this is my ancestor but I have no proof.

I am looking for anyone who may know of the Bernard O'Donnell family, who emigrated from Donegal, in 1844. The family may have come from the Letterkenny area. On July 5, 1844, Bernard O'Donnell, and his family - Sally, Barney, Neal, James, John, and Hugh - left Liverpool, England aboard the H.M.S Warren Hastings and arrived in Philadelphia, PA., U.S.A. where they settled in the South Philadelphia area around Christian St. Bernard's son, Barney, was 14 at the time. After settling in Philadelphia, two of Bernards's sons, Barney and Hugh, owned stables and ran a Coal and Ice delivery business, via horse and wagon. Neal worked with horses as well. I don't know if this is an indication as to the type of work they may have done prior to leaving Donegal, but it's all that I have to go on. (Barney - the son of Bernard O'Donnell - married a woman named Mary Scanlon after settling in Philadelphia.) I am hoping to locate family members related to the Bernard O'Donnell family in Donegal. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

DICKEY, Nathaniel b. Co Donegal 1790. Went to Pennsyvania USA in 1811. The ship's passenger list names two other Dickey's alongside of him, Samuel and James. They could be his brothers. (He could already have had other siblings in the US.) Nathaniel was Presbyterian and married an American lady of German descent, Elizabeth Kelter. It appears they returned to Donegal, Ireland to marry and then made their lives in Pennsylvania, USA. Have no parent's names for him but seek family connection.

Nathaniel's son, born in Pennsylvania went from the US to New Zealand and died there. Would be pleased to receive any information. Thanks.

MORAN - Co Donegal. Looking for a connection of this surname to that of CONNOLLY. Perhaps a marriage of a female Moran to a Connolly in the early 1800's. The name "Moran" appears as a second name linked to Connolly surnames.

The RIC list of Donegal born men 1840 to 1880 lists men of both surnames. This may just be a co-incidence despite there being a generational difference. Any information, connection or comments please. Thanks.

(reply to Donna Barnickol above) Rev. James Turretin is also my 5th gr. grandfather; his grandson Samuel (son of Hugh) left to America to escape the potato famine. He had a number of descendants here, but the branches of the family aren't in touch with one another. I have a short history that someone compiled many years ago, it has a little information about the Irish Turrittins but it's a bit sketchy. Actually we're keen to know if anything is known about Rev. James' ancestry; we don't know of anyone before him. --Tom Turrittin, Winnipeg (tomt a@t bpal dot. com)

I am trying to trace a john doherty who came from donegal with at least two brothers Hugh and michael in the 1950's. I believe they came from donegal and went to work in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. John would be 19 in 1952, his brothers were a bit older I believe. John had very black hair, hugh had brown and michael had red hair, they would be quite distinctive. John worked at Claytons Iron Foundry in Lincoln for a time. They seemed to leave Lincoln in the 1950s, and I am not sure where they went, should this ring a bell with anyone please let me know. John would be 70 plus now

KILDAY, James of that name, came to Scotland around 1840 or so, and married an ELIZA MORGAN, or Milligan, whichever family record we use! I have the 1861 Census for Arbroath in Scotland, where they lived and brought up my wife's forebears, but the only part I can decipher is "Co. Donegal" with some vague script which Donegal residents might recocnise as being a town in the County. We are looking to find her roots, and if anyone can help I'll email a scan of the record in question. Our address is jakeatunionmills@aol.com, and we hope to hear from anyone who can help, or any KILDAY cousins!

Margaret McLaughlan Strabane Donegal???

Margaret (1851) married a Daniel Pollock (1850) in 1869. According to the record of the marriage it took place in Strabane Donegal. All I can think of is, it may have been in the Diocese of Derry, which takes in part of Donegal, Tyrone, and Derry. As I'm only guessing, would some kind soul that knows about these things educate me, as Margaret's family have come to a dead end. Regards, Tess.

My grandmother had other siblings, including Michael, a brother who emigrated to the US (Brooklyn NY) before 1906. My grandmother followed him to Brooklyn and eventually married my grandfather, Peter Brock in 1909. I believe my grandmother had sisters, perhaps Bridget (Bridie?) and Mary (Mamie?). Vicki Sallee - 11:44pm Jan 29, 2010 Irish (#228 of 299)

Hello (Dia dhui),

My Great Grandmother was Sarah Dugan, born 1891 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Her parents were John Dugan, born 1858 in Ireland, emigrated to the US, into Philadelphia in November 1879. John Dugan married Mary Kelly, born 1857 in Ireland, emigrated to the US, into Philadelphia in 1877.

Many roads keep leading me back to "my" John Dugan being John James Dugan, born in 1858 in Co. Donegal, but I don't know how to verify this since I don't have any information on his parents or where exactly he was born in Ireland.

I appreciate any help/assistance anyone can offer on how to proceed with searching for Irish records etc.

Thank you (Go raibh maith agat ),

Looking for a connection. My gg Grandmother was Elizabeth Hirrel b. abt 1870 (married name), she had 3 children: Mary Elizabeth b. 1893, James Patrick b. 1894 and Charles Michael b. 1897. All the children were born in San Francisco. Census show that Elizabeth immigrated abt 1887 or 1888. Family history says she married her cousin in San Francisco. Maybe around 1892. He left her a widow before 1900. Elizabeths son James Patrick is show as a nephew of Dennis Hirrel and Rose (Collins). Elizabeth's maiden name may have been Ruddy, Collins or even Hirrel. Dennis Hirrel's parents were Patrick and Sarah (Ruddy). Anyone have any birth records that might show if Elizabeth was a Collins or Ruddy?

Becki (Polk) Pavlik - 08:44pm Oct 29, 2012 Irish (#288 of 299)

I'm looking for any information about any Polk/Poke/Pollock/Pollok families that might have lived in the area of the Parish of Raphoe AROUND 1665. My earliest PROVEN ancestor is a James Pollock who died in 1773 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, USA but DNA evidence proves a relationship to a Robert Polk whose first paper trail in America was a registration of the earmarks of his son's cattle in 1688 in Somerset County, Maryland USA. Said Robert Polk supposedly immigrated from somewhere in the area of County Donegal. We know he married a Magdalen Tasker, (daughter of Roger Tasker and sister of Barbara Tasker Keys), said Magdalen was supposedly born at Cavanacor House, near the town of Lifford.

I found a John and Robert 'Poak' listed on the 1665 Hearth Tax list for the Parish of Raphoe. I believe Robert Poak on that list and the Robert Polk that married Magdalen Tasker that came to America are one and the same person because of their close proximity to each other. I also believe that the Robert Poak on that Hearth Tax list might have been a brother to the John Poak on that list. There are some other surnames on that list whom later descendants of Robert Polk and Magdalen Tasker are know to have been connected to.

Here are some of the other names I'm interested in if anyone knows if they or their children came to America, I would love to hear from you:

LESLEY, James, Raphoe, 2, Hearths MITCHELL, Andrew, Tullidonell MITCHELL, Robert, Findrum MITCHELL, Robert, Ardechilly MITCHELL, Wm., Ardechilly MONTGOMERY, Hugh, Raphoe MOODY, John, Raphoe POAK, John, Raphoe POAK, Robert, Raphoe STEWART, John, Raphoe TWYFORD, John, Raphoe

Any information would be greatly appreciated!
